Valentine James Dieter (VJ to most, Butch to many, Daddy and Papa to a very lucky few) passed away peacefully on May 27that the age of 92.

He was the proud and loving father of six and a devoted husband to Helen.

Valentine was born in Lindsay Texas to Clara and Valentine Dieter. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Dorothy, Anna Mae and Jerome, his wife Helen and his children Michael and Denise. He is survived by his brothers Francis and Rudy, his children Loretta, Thomas, Ethleen and Victor, his grandchildren Gabriel, Cara and Tom, and great grandchildren Nathan Valentine and Adele.

Valentine led quite an extraordinary life. There are so many stories about this great man! He was a bare-knuckle boxer in his youth, he won a footrace against two collegiate track stars in his work boots. He was an avid fisherman (who once fought a 43-inch redfish for over an hour refusing to give up), he saved dogs out of the bayou, grew an outstanding garden (tomatoes were his specialty) keeping scientific notes on its seasonal progress. He was a fixer who kept all things mechanical running well past their prime from vehicles all the way to bread makers; he found every use for JB Weld, WD-40, and duct tape.

Valentine was deeply modest and generous to a fault; he had a heart the size of Texas. He loved his country, having served in the Army during WWII. He retired from Phillips Petroleum as a night superintendent after 38 years of loyal service

His sense of humor had no bounds and usually involved a great story that ended in a laugh, especially if the joke was on him. He was always concerned about the welfare of his family; just last week asking Cara if she remembered how to take care of the overflow on her car. He loved his family.

Not least of all he was an amazing father and grandfather. There have been countless moments of tenderness and joy taken with his family. He left his mark on us all.

The family would like to give special thanks to his longtime caregiver Ann Smith, as well as caregivers Lisa Collins and Tay Cormier who developed a special bond with him and were instrumental in seeing to his daily comfort.
