Rollie was the first child of Mary and Neal Hall. Though he was their first child, Rollie had three older half-siblings because of his mother's previous marriage.

Like his half-brother, Frank, Roll was a confirmed bachelor. He worked logging camps and road construction and lived in Canyon City most of his life. However, he was in Portland when he died, taking his own life (as his father had 22 years earlier). He had been badly injured in a logging accident and apparently feared being a burden.

Canyon City Man Meets Tragic Death While In Portland

The sudden tragic death of David Rollie Hall of Canyon City occurred in Portland last Friday under circumstances which at first appeared to be somewhat of a mystery as his body was not found until Sunday in the basement of the home where he was staying. He had been shot through the heart, apparently by a rifle which was found alongside the body. However, reports received yesterday by Sheriff I. B. Hazeltine from the Portland police department and coroner's office indicate that Hall met his death from a self-inflicted bullet wound. He had been discouraged and disconsolate for some time due to a severe injury to his foot which occurred a year or two ago in a logging accident and had undergone several operations. It had caused him a great deal of pain and it is believed that constant worry and the thought of losing his leg may have prompted the rash act.

He was born in Canyon City where he spent most of his life, working from there at various logging camps. He is survived by three sisters: Mrs. George Smith of Canyon City; Mrs. Mayme Dustin of Bellingham, Wash., and Mrs. Josephine McLaughlin of Lone Rock, Oregon, also a half-brother, Frank Baier of Canyon City and a half-sister, Mrs. Ellsworth Cresap of Canyon City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Driskill Mortuary, John Day, conducted by the Rev. W. D. Bach and interment was in the Canyon City cemetery.
