Margaret Stockton was a daughter of Rebecca (nee Smith) and Daniel Stockton. It appears that she lived her entire life in Stockton's Valley, Cumberland (now Clinton) County, Kentucky. Margaret's father, Daniel Stockton, was a son of "Smith Creek" John Stockton, and a grandson of Thomas Stockton, Sr., (c.1740-1809), the first settler in Clinton County and Stockton's Valley is named after him. Margaret's mother was a granddaughter of George Smith, the settler that Smith Creek in Stockton's Valley is named after.

Census records show that Margaret was born about 1831. An 1835 Clear Fork Baptist Church record appears to show that Margaret's father, Daniel Stockton, died in 1835 when Margaret was only about 4 years old. Her mother does not appear to have remarried.

In 1856 the heirs of Daniel Stockton signed a deed to Mary Ann Craig. This deed was destroyed during the Civil War, however, it was recreated and signed by five of the surviving heirs of Daniel Stockton. The surviving heirs of Daniel Stockton who signed this recreated deed were:
Hiram Stockton - born about 1821
Lemuel L. Stockton - born in 1824
Andrew J. Stockton - born about 1826
Margaret (nee Stockton) Braswell - born about 1831
and Nancy (nee Stockton) Dowell - born in 1833

It appears that sometime after the 1870 census she married a neighbor Boardvine Braswell. She is shown in the 1880 census as Margaret Brazwell. Boardvine Braswell appears to have died before the 1880 census.
