Artis was born on August 5, 1903 on a red clay hill about 7 miles west of Center, Shelby County, Texas to John Daniel Pate and Dicey Modenia Peace. He died in Shreveport, Caddo Parish Louisiana June 29, 1989.
Artis married Louise Freeman October 3, 1925 in Camp San Saba, McCulloch County, Texas. Louise was only 14 years old when she married Artis.

As a young man, Artis left Shelby County, Texas to work as a ranch hand. That is where he met Louise! He was a great carpenter and was a very hard working man.
Artis and Louise were very involved in church and spent their life serving our Lord. They were one of the sweetest couples that anyone would want to meet. They loved their children and enjoyed them as they grew up.
Artis and Louise moved to Ringgold, Louisiana after their children were born. At that time a lot of the Pate family lived in that area.
