As General Superintendent, he was responsible for the construction of the Defense Supply Center Richmond, Camp Peary in Williamsburg, Virginia and the Quartermaster Depot, Fort Lee, Virginia.
World War II interrupted his civilian career and Mr. Brockenbrough was called into the U.S. Navy as a Lt. Commander and assigned to the Naval Construction Battalion service - the Seebees. He was quickly promoted to Captain and ordered to command a Seebee Battalion in the South Pacific. His Battalion constructed airfields at Bougainville and on Guadalcanal with the enemy "shooting at us from less than 200 yards away". Mr. Brockenbrough was awarded two Silver Star medals for extraordinary service during the War.
After the War, Mr. Brockenbrough returned to the construction industry. His notable projects included automobile tunnels in Boston and New York City, and airfields in North Africa. Upon returning to Richmond, he was employed by The City of Richmond as Director of Public Utilities.
Mr. Brockenbrough joined with Warren Perrow in 1950 to form the consulting engineering firm of Perrow and Brockenbrough. The firm practiced in general civil engineering, principally site development and municipal services. Five years later, Mr. Brockenbrough left the Perrow firm to begin his own consulting engineering firm.
In 1955 Austin Brockenbrough & Associates was formed in partnership with James E. Watlington, Jr. Mr. Brockenbrough was the driving force that brought steady growth for the Firm in subsequent years.
