William was a son of Henry Boyden and Orpha (or more likely Orpah, as in Ruth 1:4, the daughter-in-law who did NOT return with Naomi) Marsh. His family migrated to Wisconsin shortly after he was born. As the Civil War wore on he enlisted in Company H of the 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery, and was mustered out 29 August 1865, a full four months after the war's end. He next married Mary Cerelia Mattoon, and they had two children: May and Pearl. Then sometime around 1885 or '90 he went west to join his brother Frank who had homesteaded in Oak Lake Township of eastern Dakota Territory, but it appears they had returned together to Wisconsin by 1900, William with his family and Frank without.
