John Councel Bryan was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He served as Captain, New Bern District Minutemen, 1st NC Regiment, Continental Troops. He fought at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge.

John Councel Bryan was the son of Ann Cady Norwood, d. ca 1760-1761, and John Bryan, b. ca 1695-1699, d. Craven Co., NC, ca 1759 (his father died before Oct. 20, 1767, when John Councel Bryan sold land from his estate).

[From the dates listed for the children in his will, he probably was married prior to his marriage to Mary Ann Fulford.]

He married in Craven Co., North Carolina, December 7, 1793, Mary Ann Fulford. Marriage Bond was signed by John Morgan and Sam Chapman. Mary Ann was born in 1769, died in 1821.

Father of:

1. J. Hardy Bryan, d. ca 1808-1809 (estate probated in 1809); married July 23, 1805, Dorcas Nelson

2. Thomas O. Bryan, living in 1807 & 1826, d. ca 1827 (estate probated in 1827)

9. Mary Ann Bryan, #42324895, b. September 6, 1802; died August 1881; buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC. Married June 10, 1823, Richard Sharpe Mason, #63722819, b. 1795, d. 1874.

John Councel Bryan was High Sheriff of Craven County on Sept. 11, 1782; Dec. 30, 1785; Nov. 7, 1786; July 7, 1791; and June 7, 1792, according to court papers and letters from NC Gov. Richard Caswell.

After Christ Church in New Bern had been completed about the year 1750, its vestrymen tried to get a rector. Their efforts along this line failed at first, as there were few ministers in the New World. So, in 1752, they wrote to England, probably to the Bishop of London, asking aid in their endeavor to obtain a regular rector. Even before the arrival of the rector that this appeal drew here, it was perhaps in response to this letter, with its news of the new local church, that King George II had a special silver communion service made for the parish in 1752 and sent it to New Bern as a royal gift, presented through John Council Bryan, then a church warden (Crown of life; History of Christ Church, New Bern, NC, 1715-1940; Carraway, Sprague).

Probably the John C. Bryan listed in the 1790 Census in New Bern District with 1 male head of family, 1 male under 16, 4 females, 0 other free persons, and 8 slaves.
