Emma was the daughter of Abraham Mason Spaulding and Jane Pickard of Onondaga county, New York. They moved to Illinois, where Emma was born on December 9, 1851 (calculated from date of death and age on tombstone). The family moved to Green Garden, Will county, Illinois by 1860, then to Pella township, Ford county, Illinois by 1870. Emma married Thomas Read of Pella township on 27 Oct 1870 in Ford county, Illinois. She and Thomas had two sons - William E. Read, born in 1872 and Frank Read born in 1876. She died of consumption in 1878. As she was dying, she asked Thomas' brother Edwin and his wife Helen, who did not have children, to adopt her younger son Frank.
