Rites for Mrs. Margaret Read Held This Afternoon

Mrs. Margaret Read, 96, died at her home in Piper City at about 5:30 o'clock Tuesday morning, April 15, after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Cedric M. Powell. The Rev. Merwyn L. Johnson, of Pittsfield, former pastor here, was the soloist, accompanied by Mrs. M. V. Kerchenfaut, and also assisted with the service.

Burial was in Brenton cemetery. Casket bearers were Arby Read, Ted Read, Donald Read, Robert Read, Edwin E. Read, and Elmo Read. In charge of the many floral tributes were Mrs. J. J. Lyons, Mrs. G. H. Kemnetz, Mrs. Allen Day, Mrs. Fred Kemnetz, Mrs. Don Harford, Mrs. John E. Wilson, Mrs. Wayne Johnson, and Mrs. E. O. Quick.

Mrs. Read was born January 15, 1866, at Moscow, Scotland, the daughter of William and Agnes Lindsey Smith. When she was less than a year old the family came to this country and settled in Kankakee county, near Chebanse, later moving to this community. On April 8, 1885, at Watseka she was united in marriage to Thomas Read. They resided on the Read homestead in the Sand Ridge community until 1902, when they moved to the house in Piper City.

Mrs. Read was preceded in death by her husband on November, 1920. and by a son. Wade Smith. who died in infancy. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Clara Switzer who resided with her mother, and Mrs. Helen Hawthorne, and son Howard R. Read. of Piper City. She also leaves three grandsons, Thomas Read of Plainfield, Ind., H. William Read at the U. S. Naval Prepatory School, Bainbridge, Maryland, and James Hawthorne of Piper City: one great grandson, and one sister, Mrs. Agnes Johnson of Kanawha, Iowa.

Mrs. Read was a member of the Methodist church, and as far as her health permitted was active in all of its organizations. She was a life member of W. S. C. S. and the Foreign Missionary Society. Not only her family but a wide circle of friends will remember her kind and friendly manner, her willingness to help those in need and her Christian life and service.
