Stephen Ahrens was born in O'Fallon, St Charles County, Missouri, on December 26, 1870, the sixth child of Joseph Ahrens and Josephine (Heuer) Ahrens. Stephen's siblings were Phillip Ahrens, Mary Anna Ulsas, Theresia G Limpert, George L Ahrens, Elisabeth Ahrens, and Katharina Ahrens.

In February 1895, Stephen married Gertrude Erschen, in Livingston County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Mathias Erschen, and Caroline (Mueller) Erschen.

Stephen and Gertrude became the parents of ten children: Joseph Ahrens, Josephine Ahrens, twins Charles M Ahrens, and Francis M Ahrens, Mary Agnes (Sister Stephanie) Ahrens, Marcella Jeanette (Ahrens) VanDeWarker, Mary H Ahrens, Dorothy Ahrens, Clement Raymond "Steve" Ahrens, and Francis Edward Ahrens.

Stephen died in Livingston County, Illinois.
