Jewell Tavonatti died suddenly at her home in Central City October 20, 1982. Services were held at St. James Methodist Church with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.

She moved to Central City in 1935 with her first husband, John C. Hayes, who was a miner. They divorced and she married Victor J. Tavonatti on Jue 30, 1940. He was the Gilpin County assessor for over 20 years.
Jewell went to work for the Central City post office during the Christmas season in 1948 and stayed for 32 years. She served under seven people: Postmaster Pearl Robb, Postmaster Clifford Parsons, Postmaster Ray Colburn, Postmaster Max Robb, Officer-in-Charge Winnie Anderle, Officer-in-Charge Dorothy Ottinger and Postmaster Charlotte Keim.
She is survived by a son, Clifford Hayes of Westminster; a sister, Dorothy Gherna of Canon City; a brother, Ivan Acton of Colorado Springs, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

JEWELL - A real gem
On Wednesday evening, October 20, Gilpin County lostaa beloved old-timer and I lost my Star Boarder at The Prospector. Jewell Tavonatti occupied a stool at the counter of our cafe for the past three and one-half years, and she became a big part of our lives. She made several trips to our home in Walden where she loved to eat her breakfast on the front porch with the chipmunks, and she never tired of looking over the valley. She would talk of these trips for months, afterward, and I'm so thankful I took her one more time in September.
We can all be grateful that Jewell didn't linger in the hospital, nor was she all alone at the time of her death.
I, for one, will certainly miss this fabulous lady and as I write this, I keep expecting that little green Falcon to pull in at The Prospector.
Rest in Peace, Jewell.
