Betty Walter, 69, Hays, formerly of Catherine, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born Feb. 8, 1940, in Munjor to Carl S. and Helen (Schmidt) Leiker.
She married Leo A. Walter on Oct. 1, 1960, in Hays.
She was a homemaker and worked at Vagabond Motel in Hays for five years. She was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church and St Catherine Christian Mothers Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; four daughters, Doris Smolik and husband, Gary, Great Bend, Sharon Knapp and husband, Larry, and Brenda Bryant and husband, Tate, all of Hays, and Pam Montgomery and husband, Will, Catherine; three brothers, Earl J. Leiker and wife, Mary Ann, Hays, Harold Leiker and wife, Carol, Firestone, Colo.; Carl Leiker Jr. and wife, Donna, Pflugerville, Texas; a sister, Janet Dreiling, Parker, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Leiker, Hays; and eight grandchildren, Tyler Werth, Morgan Werth, Kacey Bryant, Josh Bryant, Ashley Montgomery, Amanda Montgomery, Laura Montgomery and Luke Montgomery.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Merlin Leiker.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catherine; burial in St. Catherine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, both at Cline's Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601. A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a St. Catherine Christian Mothers Altar Society rosary at 7 p.m., both at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Catholic Church in care of the mortuary.
