As a boy, he was pressed into service with his team of horses to haul provisions and ammunition during the Revolutionary War.
After the death of his father, he fell heir to some slaves. About this time near the end of the century, Alexander moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he freed his slaves. He later moved to Richland County, Ohio where he married Margaret Kirkpatrick who was born in Richland County, Ohio in 1775. There were twelve children born to Alexander and Margaret:
1) Rebecca Mahaffey (married Helms)
2) Mary Polly Mahaffey (married Rodgers)
3) Margaret Mahaffey (m. Carson)
4) Hannah (m. Hines)
5) Ellen Mahaffey
6) Alexander Mahaffey
7) Enoch Mahaffey (d. 23 yrs. old)
8) Hugh Mahaffey
9) Eliza Mahaffey
10) Joseph Mahaffey
11) William Mahaffey
12) John Mahaffey (located in Wyandotte Co. KS)
He died in 1851 in Amity, Ohio at the home of his daughter.
