David was the son of Joseph & Christine Beahm Bowman. On 15 July 1850, he married Elizabeth Garst.

They were the parents of 10 children-Rev Daniel Frederick, Joseph, Sarah (died young), Henry, Alpheus Dane, Peter Garst, Christian, Mary (died as an infant), Rebecca Anne (Pritchett), and Sarah 'Sallie' Magdalena (Porter).
