John Stephen Blackshare was the son of James Blackshare and second wife Ruth Emmaline Riggs.

His father James Blackshare was born in Obion Co Tennessee on Aug 19, 1824 and died Aug 31, 1893 in Clay Co Arkansas. He married Ruth Riggs on Mar 14, 1858 in Tennessee.

John Stephen Blackshare was the grandson of Rev. Jacob Blackshear and his first wife Mary "Polly" Berry. Jacob was born Jan 26, 1802 in Williamson Co Tennessee and died May 5, 1871 in Obion Co Tennessee. Mary Berry was born Sept 7, 1799 in South Carolina and died 1834 in McNairy Co Tennessee, the daughter of Michael Richard Berry and Mary Vickers. Michael Berry was an early settler of Hardin Co Tennessee where his Will was probated on Apr 3, 1820.

John Stephen Blackshare was the gr-grandson of Jesse Blackshear (b. 1757, died July 26, 1803 in Williamson Co Tenn) and Hannah Huggins (1771, died June 4, 1829 in Wayne Co Tenn).

John Stephen Blackshare was the gg-grandson of Elisha Stout Blackshear, born 1736 in Kent County, Delaware and died 1810 in Jones Co North Carolina; and, Susannah Ward.

With his first wife, Nannie Meriwether, John Stephen Blackshare was the father of Norma Pearl, Jewel S., James B., and Sam B. Blackshare.

After Nannie's death, he married school teacher Emma Caroline Pegram, daughter of Henry Baker Pegram and Louisa Rembert. Emma Caroline was born September 10, 1884 in Claiborne Co Mississippi, and died May 13, 1943 in Bossier City, Louisiana. They were the parents of two daughters: Leida Emmaline and Stephana J. Blackshare.

The family name over the years has been spelled many ways: Blackshaw, Blackshire, Blackshear, Blacksher, and Blackshare.
