A native of Boykins, VA, Ethel Catherine Bates Hunt was the daughter of Francis and Herman Grant, and John C. Bates. She was educated in Southampton County Public Schools, and received her degree in cosmetology from Norfolk State College.

Catherine was the devoted wife of 45 years to Edward W. Hunt, Sr., and proud mother to four daughters and three sons. In addition to her role as wife and mother, she worked for over 25 years outside of the home, and also as a business owner within the community. Catherine was a dedicated member of Zion Bethel United Church of Christ in Portsmouth, VA; and enjoyed numerous positions there including that of Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, and Women's Fellowship Member.

Catherine is most remembered and admired by her family and friends for her loving kindness, wisdom, strength, spiritual guidance, generosity, and support. Even throughout her extended illness, she never complained; but rather holding firm to her faith and trust in The Lord, continued to be a tremendous example of a true virtuous woman and matriarch to those that knew her.

Left to celebrate and cherish Catherine's legacy are her husband, Edward Sr., mother, Francis, daughters: Brenda Hunt, Denise Pugh (William), Millicent Harding (Preston), and Duana Hunt-Branch (Greg), sons: Edward Hunt Jr.(Helen), Donnie Hunt, and Dion Hunt (Faye), dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one sister, three brothers, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and extended family members.
