He was born in North Grimston, East Riding of Yorkshire.

When he was made a Freeman of London in 1838, his application named his father as John Dale of North Grimston, according to early records of the family in the adjacent parish of Settrington. George moved to London about 1823 to join William Dale in business. George took over the cheesemonger premises while William developed his partnership with John Marshall as provisions agents. This means that they were wholesalers of butter, cheese and bacon, and similar foodstuffs.
