William Garrett was born in Columbia, Indiana Sept. 1, 1842 and died at his home in Pacific, MO October 13, 1915 after a lingering illness. He enlisted in Co. K, 21st Illinois Vol. Infantry, June 25, 1861, and received a gun shot wound at the battle of Stone River, through the hip, Dec. 30, 1862 that never healed. Over half a century he has been a sufferer. In 1866 he married Miss Mary Adams and to this union four children were born, Mrs. Emma Ware, Harry Garrett (dead), Mrs. Elizabeth Henson of Benton City, Washington, and Rudolph of this city. This wife died when the children were quite young. In March 1879 he was married to Mrs. Mary Knost and to them three children were born, Mrs. Bessie Beasley, Mrs. Jennie Parrett of this city and Mrs. Nelle McConnell of Los Angeles, California. There are also three step-children, Mrs. Eva Scheunemann of Sullivan (MO), Oliver Knost of Grove Spring, MO, and Mrs. Rose Greeusweight of Craig, Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Steve Harris of Ft. Scott, Kansas; one brother, Thomas Garrett of Olney, Illinois; and eight grandchildren. Mr. Garrett and family came to Pacific October, 1879 and for a number of years lived on a farm south of here in Jefferson County, later moving in town where they kept a hotel and restaurant. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Streubing in the M. E. Church and the remains were laid to rest in the public cemetery, Friday afternoon. The Transcript joins the friend of the family in extending sympathy. (Pacific Transcript, October 22, 1915)
