When Sam was 26 years of age he married Delilah Rhodes, also 26 years of age, in the home of W. B. Cook who was a Justice of the Peace. Samuel was a farmer his whole life and he was a member of the Baptist Church.
Samuel's obituary which was found in the Fairfield Daily Ledger dated July 26, 1937; page 6, column 6 states:
"Samuel BLACK, 77, died at his home five miles southeast of Batavia Sunday, July 25 at 12:30 a.m. after being in poor health since November and bedfast the past seven weeks. He was born one-half mile from where he passed away, and had been a farmer all his life.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Campbell Funeral Parlor in Batavia conducted by the Rev. E. M. Gregson of Eldon. Burial will be in the Batavia Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Delilah; four daughters, Mrs. Fred Gonterman of Eldon, Mrs. Charles Wilson of Fairfield, Mrs. Walter Purdy of Chariton, and Lela at home. Two sons, Everett of Eldon and Cecil of Agency, also survive, as well as one brother, Arch Black of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Garlan Hoskins six months ago."
