Robert A., "R. A." Benningfield Jr., age 88 of Clarksville, passed away Tuesday April 14, 2009, at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Medical Center in Bonham.

Mr. Benningfield was born July 11, 1920 in the Peters Prairie Community in Red River County to Robert Andrew and Lillian Anne Essary Benningfield. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and retired from the Red River Arsenal.

Mr. Benningfield quit school and entered the U.S. Army in 1941. During WWII he served overseas in the African Campaign. He was injured December 24, 1943 and was sent back to the States and was in the U.S. Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida until he was Honorably Discharged as a result of his wartime injures in October, 1944. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to school and finished his education.

His beloved wife of 44 years, Mrs. Juanita Presley Benningfield, preceded him in death along with 8 older sisters.

Survivors include a son, Michael Douglas Benningfield of Bogata; daughter, Pamela Russell and husband Mike of Powderly; grandson, Dr. Michael Russell II and wife Angie of Tyler; great grandchildren, Morgann, Abbey and Reid; grandson, Robby Russell and wife Staci of Paris; great grandchildren, Ashley and Andrew; step grandson, John Davis of Texarkana; step great grandson, Hudson; step granddaughter, Julie Flatt and husband Micheal of Deport; step great grandson, Jamison.

Funeral services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009 in Lindeman Chapel of Clarksville Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Reger officiating. Burial will follow with full Military honors in Fairview Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Clarksville Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Dr. Michael Russell, II, Robby Russell, Andrew Russell and Reid Russell.

The family will receive friends an hour before service time at Clarksville Funeral Home.
