Brewster Mourns Second Viet Casualty, Tim Lane

Brewster grieved this week as news of its second casualty in the Vietnam conflict, Pfc. John Timothy Lane, spread around Town. It had mourned its first loss, Lance Corporal Marvin Galbraith, less than six weeks ago.

Tim's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Lane, were notified by the army last Wednesday that he had died in Vietnam May 4th "as a result of wounds received while at a night defensive position when engaged hostile force in fire fight."

Tim had joined the army last September and flown to Vietnam March 11th. Born at Fullerton, California, February 26, 1948, he attended California schools until the family moved to Brewster in July 1964. He then attended Brewster high school, and was graduated in 1966. During his school days he had been interested in football, tumbling, and art.

He worked briefly after graduation for Crane and Crane, Custom Orchards, and for his father at the H and L. Cattle Co. As soon as he finished his military service, he expected to return to school and study ornamental horticulture.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Trecia Lane Johnson, and JoElla Lane; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Stewart, La Habra, California.

Flags will be flown at half-mast at Brewster while funeral services are held at the Church of Christ, Pateros, Thursday at 2 p.m. Conley Wilmoth will officiate. Interment will follow at Brewster Cemetery.

Arrangements by William Barnes.

Pfc. John T. Lane, of Brewster, who hurled himself on an enemy grenade to save the life of his fellow soldiers, has been posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
The award was presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Lane, of Rt. 1 Bx 197-A, Brewster, by Brig. Gen. Richard L. Irby, deputy commanding general Fort Lewis.
Last May Lane and three men had moved into a night defensive position when an enemy force began to infiltrate his unit perimeter.
During the fierce fire fight, an enemy soldier threw a hand grenade which exploded in the hole when the solders were located.
With complete disregard for his own safety, he covered the explosion with his own body.
At the time of his death, Lane was a member of the 9th Infantry, 25h Infantry Division.
