JOSEPHINE JEWETT

Mary Josephine "Josie" Jewett, 89, passed away May 30, 2004 in Bozeman. She was born Oct. 12, 1914 in Bozeman to Ray and Daisy Beam. She grew up in Willow Creek in a family of eight children, and graduated from Willow Creek high school. Josie married Orville Jewett in 1935. They had five children and many happy years were spent in the old Parker Homestead cabin which is now a State park on Hwy 287 west of Three Forks.

Eventually Josie moved to Virginia City where she worked as a clerk in the Madison County courthouse and later as a hostess warmly welcoming guests to the Virginia City Museum. Her life's greatest devastation was when her youngest son, Daniel Allen Jewett, was killed in a hunting accident in the Ruby Valley prior to his graduation from high school.

Josie lived on Granite Creek for over twenty-five years where the family had a wonderful time picnicking, hiking, riding horses, fishing and exploring old n-fines. Josie became an expert on plant identification and the medicinal use of plants, practices since handed down in the family.

She retired in 1984 and moved to Pony to be near her brother John Beam and sisters Evelyn Duncan, Alice Barnett, and Edith Larsen, neices and nephews. She loved taking daily long hikes in the mountains with John and Alice and a pack of dogs. Josie was a friend and well-wisher to everyone, welcoming one and all to her home, and joyfully living each day as it came.

Later Josie moved to Open Arms Assisted Living home in Belgrade where she was lovingly cared for by Rod and Faith Vanover, their family, and loving staff until the time of her death.

Josie is survived by her daughters Jeannette Elpel, Leita Beardsley, Dixie Jewett of Dayton, Oregon, and by son Joseph Jewett of Helena. Other survivors include John Beam and Alice Barnett of Pony, Rosie Wood of Sheridan, MT,. Jim Beam of Carson City, NV, and Bill Beam of Mammoth as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. at K & L Mortuary in Harrison on Thursday, June 3, 2004. Graveside services and burial will follow in Virginia City at Hillside cemetery. A reception will be held in Pony at 2:00 p.m. at the Senior Center on main street.
