Coroner's Jury Empaneled in Death of Young Hunter

VIRGINIA CITY - Madison County Sheriff-Coroner Phil Loucks empaneld a coroner's jury of seven men Saturday morning to review evidence in the fatal shooting of Daniel Allen Jewett, 17-year old Ennis High School senior Friday night.
The youth with two unidentified companions, 15 and 17, left Virginia City at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon for an overnight hunting trip in the Upper Ruby area. About two miles from the Williams' ranch on the Sweetwater Road they spotted a deer and pursued it. Returning to the car one of the boys laid his gun in the trunk, accidentally discharging the first gun when doing so. The shot passed through the car and struck young Jewett, who was leaning over the back seat helping to stow gear. Jewett was struck in the abdomen and death almost instantaneous, according to Luecks.
The boys notified the sheriff's office of the accident from the Williams' ranch. The coroners jury will be retained pending a decision on an inquest.
Jewett was born Feb. 17, 1946, in Willow Creek. He had resided in Virginia City eight years and attended schools in Virginia City and Ennis.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Rufus Rafferty of Virginia City; sisters, Mrs. Ed Elpel of Los Altos, Calif., Mrs. Joe Beardsley of Salt Lake City, and Dixie Lee Jewett of Las Vegas; brother, Joe of Garrison; father, Orville Jewett of Willow Creek; two grandmothers, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held In St. Paul Episcopal Church in Virginia City with an Episcopal clergyman officiating. Time of the service has not been set pending arrival of members of the family. Interment will be in the Virginia City Cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of the Raper Funeral Home.
