The following information was shared by Find A Grave visitor, Janet Garland:
The photo is not this John Shaw. We don't have an exact death date for him, but it was most likely between 1836 and 1840, either in LA or Southeast TX. But, regardless of the location, the photo you have there appears to date from the Civil War and there was no photographers in TX or LA between 1836 and 1840. Photography was a pretty new thing at that time. If we ever find a drawing of these rather early Shaws, I'd be thrilled.
Next, we have no year of birth for John Shaw, either. And there are no records of this John Shaw in Onslow, NC. The data contained in the DAR records that mention the name "Wade" in any way are false. The couple named had no children (as proven by their will many years later), therefore they are not related directly to this Shaw family. And that DAR record is not longer used as proof of qualification for membership in the DAR through any Shaw line.
Though John's children were born in NC and SC, John Shaw may have been born in Ireland. There appears to be a possibility that he was a cousin of Alexander Shaw b: 1771 in Antrim, Ireland, himself an immigrant to SC. And before Ireland, this Shaw family was probably living in Scotland.
There is no record whatever of this particular family of Shaws living in TN or KY. Ever, I wish it were that easy.
Something that may be of note is that one of John's sons was William Shaw, Jr. And he ALWAYS signed his name that way, which could be an important thing if you were related to another William Shaw in your family that lived in the same vicinity. And I think that was the case. John Shaw and Jones Shaw lived in St. Mary's Parish LA before heading west to Texas. There is an old, simple headstone in St. Mary's Parish for a William Shaw, Jr. It could be that its William Shaw, Jr., John Shaw's father. He does not show up in the 1820 St. Mary's Parish census, so it would appear that he died 1815-1819. The Shaws probably made some preliminary visits to TX, perhaps with the Dunmans, before moving there. William Shaw, Jr., moved to Texas with John and Jones where he divorced his first wife in 1838.
