Christian Klein, born 1830 in Nassau, Germany, was the eldest child of the eight known children of Johannes Klein and Anna Marie Spritzhorn Klein. The family came to Texas from Germany before 1847, establishing their home in the Pedernales Settlements of Gillespie County, Texas, which would later come to be known as Tivydale. On 15 December 1853, Christian married Gertrude Knopp, daughter of Peter and Margaretha Segner Knopp. Together they had thirteen known children: John, Joseph, Bertha, Lina, Franz, William, Jacob, Carl, Mary, Anna, George, Rosa, Ida, and Amalia. Christian became a naturalized American citizen on 21 May 1860. A farmer all his life, Christian died 26 April 1882 at the age of 51 years and was buried, along with many of his family members, in the family cemetery in Gillespie County.
