JACOB HADLEY ANDREW

Jacob Hadley Andrew was born at Wilmington, Ohio, June 20, 1844, and passed away at his home in Chariton, May 8, 1920, aged 75 years, 10 months and 19 days. He was the son of William B. and Ruth Hadley Andrew, who were the parents of 10 children, Jacob was the eldest child.

The parents and grandparents were orthodox Quakers, Mr. Andrew spent his boyhood on a farm and at the age of 16 he heard the call of his country and was among the very first. He was enlisted in the 17th Ohio Infantry, Co. G, and served during the duration of the war. He participated in seventeen hard fought battles and received an honorable discharge the 10th of July, 1865.

He was united in marriage to Lydia Jane White at Hillsboro, Ohio, Feb. 28, 1866. He, with his family and brother, John Thomas Andrew, came west with the early settlers in 1868. They located on a farm in Taylor county. The brother is still a resident of that county.

As there was no Quaker church in the locality, he, with others helped to organize the M. E. church at Guss, Iowa. This church is still there and the people are worshipping in it at the present time. He came to Chariton in 1883, and here continued his residence till the day of his death. He transferred his membership from the church at Guss to the First Methodist church of this city.

During these 37 years of residency in this county Mr. Andrew has been one of Lucas county's most useful citizens. He has always supported every good move for the betterment of the community and served in an official capacity longer than any other citizen of the county.

For 19 years he has been overseer of the poor. His administration of this office has been highly satisfactory and in his capacity as overseer he has taken more of an interest in this important office than the requirements of this position usually require. He has exercised good judgment in the performance of his duties and his interest in those who needed his services has been a personal one. For twelve years he has had charge of the soldiers' relief. During these years of service as an official, he has made a large number of friends, and many of these are loud in their expression of sorrow at his death.

There were 12 children in this family. Two died in infancy. Those living are: Frank M. Andrew, Memphis, Tenn; Arthur A. Andrew, St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. Sadie Householder, Chariton; Mrs. Eva Larimer, Nevada, Ia.; Miss Emma Andrew, Chariton; Mrs. Myrtle McCamas, Traer, Ia.; Mrs. Jessie Bradbury, Alliance, Nebr.; Mrs. Mary Nine, New Virginia, Ia.; Mrs. Stella Nolan, Chariton; and Merritt A. Andrew, Sterling, Colo.

There are two brothers surviving - J. T. Andrew and Wilson H. Andrew, Villisca, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. A. Anson, Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Andrew, the beloved wife and mother, died Dec. 28, 1911.
