Crushed to Death.
Mrs. Downey and Grandson Fall Through a Bridge and are Crushed.
An accident which caused the death of Mrs. Barbara Downey, of Port Williams, and Mayfield Downey, her small grandson, occurred near Port Williams at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Downey and the boy were both riding the same horse home from a visit to neighbors. While crossing a small bridge over a creek that is know as the Dalby branch of Owl creek, the bridge gave way and the horse and riders were plunged to the almost dry bed of the stream, ten feet below. The lad fell underneath was crushed so badly that he died in fifteen minutes after the accident. Mrs. Downey was so badly injured from the effects of the fall that she died about an hour and a half later.
Mrs. William Tarner, who lives abut 100 yards from the bridge, heard Mrs. Downey's screams and cries for help and ran to her assistance. She succeeded in dragging Mrs. Downey to the top of the bank then ran for help. When her husband arrived the boy was dead.
The bridge was a rotten frame structure eight feet wide and ten feet long. It was poorly supported.
Mrs. Downey was a widow of about 55 years of age. Mayfield, her grandson, was 5 years old. The funeral of both will be held tomorrow and the interment will be made in the Port Williams cemetery.
