Mr. Downey's second wife, Virginia G. ("Jennie") (Snelson) Frazier, was the niece of his first wife, Margaret Anna ("Polly") (Funderburk) [Wagner] Downey. Jennie's mother and Polly's sister was Marinda (Funderburk) [Snelson] [Gregory] Norris.
John Downey was the son of Ezekiel Downey and Barbara Crites.
He married Margaret Anna ("Polly") (Funderburk) Wagner, daughter of William Washington ("W. W.") Funderburk and Lavina Ann ("Vina") Wallace and widow of George A. Wagner, on May 24, 1897; they were married until her death on February 9, 1936. The couple had one child together, a daughter, namely:
ROSELLA ("ROSE") (DOWNEY) HERZOG (1900-1971).

Born on a farm homesteaded by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Downey in the Sumner area, Mr. Downey had lived south of town most of his life where he was a farmer for many years. He had lived in Atchison since his retirement.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Otto (Rosella) Herzog of St. Joe and a stepson, Oscar Wagner of Kansas City, Kas. His second [sic-first] wife was the former Mrs. Pollyanna [sic-Polly Anna] Wagner, who preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Stanton chapel with Brother Henry Hundertmark of Jehovah Witnesses officiating. Burial will be in Sumner cemetery."
