OBITUARY
BRIGHAM CITY – Charles Morgan Hawkes, a lifelong resident of Brigham City, passed away August 16, 2009. Morgan was born June 1, 1921, the son of Mirle and Estella Pulsipher Hawkes. He attended school in Brigham City, graduating from Box Elder High School. He married Elsie Bowen November 11, 1941 in the Logan LDS Temple.
Morgan served in the military in WWII as a staff sergeant in the Infantry in the European Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. Returning from the military, he enrolled at USU and graduated with a BS 1951, and MEd 1953. Morgan served in the Box Elder school district as a teacher, principal, Asst. Supt. and Superintendent, and was a recipient of the Utah State Educator of the year award.
He was a president of the Brigham City Chapter of Sons of Utah Pioneers, and was chosen, with his wife, to receive the honor of "Couple of the Year" from the National Society of SUP.
As a faithful member of the LDS Church, he served in many positions including Bishop, High Councilor, Stake Patriarch, temple officiator, sealer, and counselor in the Ogden Temple Presidency. He and his wife, Elsie served a mission at the Historic Carthage Jail.
Morgan was a gentle, kind man, and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved gardening, being with his family, and serving others.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Elaine, his parents, brothers William (Bill), Marcus and Dean, and sisters Mary Cheshire, and Margaret Peterson. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, daughter Charlene (Dean) Patterson, and sons Leonard (Jan Parkinson) Hawkes and Lawrence (Pam Larsen) Hawkes, 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, brothers Jay Hawkes, Lee Hawkes, Glenn Hawkes, and sister Iona Scothern.
Viewings will be Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, August 20, 2009 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary 205 S. 100 E. Brigham City.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the Brigham City 15th Ward Chapel 203 N. 2nd W. Brigham City.
Interment in the Brigham City Cemetery.
