In 1899, her mother Lillian had a nervous breakdown. The parents were unable to care for the children and placed them on an orphan train. Lillian and William returned to William's hometown of Oshawa, Canada with their newborn baby Charles. As finances permitted, the family sent for their children. Irene was adopted by Emily (Larsson)and John Olson/Olsen and they refused to give her up.
Lillian and William had six more children (total of 11): Francis Kendrick, Elizabeth Ruth, Mabel Ellen, Robert George, Marcella and Albert Roy.
Irene married Joseph Akre in Polk County on January 9, 1912. They had 11 children: Clarence (Tex), Emily, Beulah, Jeanette, Kermit (Bud), Lawrence (Lorne), Edith, E'Layne, Robert, Gary and Roger.
In 1929, Irene met her biological parents for a visit. Her mother Lillian died in 1949 and her father William died in 1953. In 1959, Irene was able to meet her siblings at a family reunion.
Joseph Akre died in 1951. Irene married her son Tex's wife's Ila father, Gilbert Orin Randall on June 7, 1953 in Itasca County. Irene died in 1966 and is buried at the Itasca Calvary Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
