Frank was an excellent carpenter, working in furniture and things of this nature during retirement. He and his son, Virgil, raised broom corn and Frank made brooms with an antique family broom machine. The machine is today the property of the "Old Threshers Association" of Mt. Pleasant, IA. These brooms were always sold out at the end of the season. Frank also raised his own tobacco, which was strong enough to separate the men from the boys.
