John Purtell's 1909 obituary: Passing of a Good Man

The death of John Purtell, father of Drs. Edward, Joseph, Thomas and John Purtell of Milwaukee, in his home at Monches, March 8, marks the first break in a large family circle and the departure of a model husband, and father and respected citizen.
Mr. Purtell was born of Irish parents in Branford, Canada, September 29th, 1837, and moved to Wisconsin with his parents in 1845, settling on a farm near Monches. He was married to Catherine Sullivan in 1860. Twelve children were born to them, seven boys, two of whom died in infancy, and five girls. For thirty years Mr. Purtell served as postmaster at Monches. …..Besides the widow, eleven of twelve children, and twenty-seven grandchildren survive.
(The reference to 11 surviving children appears to be an error—according to other records, one son died in infancy and the other at age 8 )

!(And a second obituary with some slightly different facts)
