Antonio Aván was the son of Juan Pedro Martinez and María Ygnacía Montoya. Identified brothers were Juan Ramón and Desiderio de Jesús Martinez. Maternal grandparents were Antonio Abán Montoya and María Dolores Vigil. Antonio Abán Montoya and his brother Desiderio were executed for their roles in the 1837 Chimayó Rebellion.

Antonio Aván Martinez married María Placida Ortega of the Chimayó weaving family. Their children were María Felicitas, María del Socorro, María Estefana (D: infancy), María Petra Celestina, Praxedes, José (D: infancy), José Nicasio, and María Ignacia.
