Vera J. Hayden
April 4, 1911 - Aug. 29, 2009
Gresham resident Vera J. Hayden, 98, died Saturday, Aug. 29, surrounded by family.
A private family service will be held. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Corvallis.
Vera was born April 4, 1911, in Pollock, Mo., to Conrad and Edna (Rodgers) Boyd. She moved to Bridgeport, Neb., to attend the country school. She graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1929.
During her high school years, Vera, who was a cheerleader, met Ben F. Hayden, a fellow student and all-star football player, and they married in 1932. They went into the grocery business, and they eventually owned and operated several grocery stores. In 1950, Ben and Vera moved to Corvallis. Vera moved to Gresham in 1996 to be closer to her daughter and extended family.
Vera got to travel extensively and see many places. She enjoyed traveling by air and on cruise ships, but her favorite way to go on vacation was in the family car. She always commented on how much was overlooked when just "flying over it." Vera was also active in various church circles, the Eastern Star and "Great Decisions."
Her husband preceded her in death in 1985.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Pollard of Gresham; brother, Earl Boyd of Salem; two grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one step-great-great-granddaughter.
Memorial donations can be made to the Portland Adventist Hospice Program, 5835 N.E. 122nd Ave., Suite 135, Portland, 97230.
Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
