John W. Axtell is a native of Clayton, Wis., born December 29, 1855, son of John and Emeline (Berry) Axtell, natives respectively of Maine and Vermont. They came west in 1844, located at Clayton, Wis., pre-empted 160 acres of land, proved up their claim, built a fine home and remained on the place until 1858, when they sold out and moved to Casco, Wis., where the father engaged in farming, milling and real estate business until 1865. In that year they moved to Hortonville, Wis., and there the father conducted a flour mill until 1874. His declining years were spent in farming at Muckwa, Wis., where both he and his wife died.
John W. received his education in the common schools of Hortonville, Wis., after which he moved with his parents to Muckwa, Wis., where he helped on the farm. In 1885 he came to Minnesota and located at Pine City, engaging in the carpenter business for several years. Later he established a planing and custom feed mill, in which business he now continues. Mr. Axtell was married December 30, 1876, at New London, Wis., to Nellie Heath, of Muckwa, Wis., daughter of John Heath. To this union eight children were born, six of whom are living. They are: Archie W., Albert E. (deceased), Millie (deceased), John, Emeline, Delta M., Glenn F. and Nellie E.
Mr. Axtell is a Republican and worships at the Methodist Episcopal church. He was village recorder six years and has served on the board of education nine years.
