Roswell was postmaster in N. Lansing, NY for 74 years. He earned the title oldest postmaster, living to the age of 93 years 4 months and 2 days. He continued on in his position as postmaster until his demise.

His brother Nelson practiced law with William Seward and a conversation took place that it might be useful for brother Roswell to be postmaster of the town in which he was living. Mr. Seward took interest in helping him and a few days later he received his commission, signed by then postmaster general John McLean. The commission from John Quincy Adams was dated June 28, 1828. Roswell was just 19 years old at the time.
