John Swetech, Sr. was the third child of Vasil Sviticz and wife O'lena Dutka. His parents immigrated from Ruthenia in 1903.

John's father died tragically when John was only 8 years of age and after that the family fell on hard times. Due to financial hardships, John had to leave school after the eighth grade and find employment to help the family.

John married Marion Charlotte Wells on October 22, 1927 in Port Dickinson, New York. They had three children: John Jr., Shirley, and Charles.

About 1930 the family moved to Los Angeles County, California. Wife Marion went first, with son John Jr., by train. John came later by bus, following Route 66.

John found employment as a checker at a Safeway in Long Beach. Around the late 1930s he got a job working in the Dayton Foundry in Hollydale. He worked there for about ten years, then he took a job with Helm's Bakery as a route salesman. He did this for approximately twenty years.

He and Marion made their home in South Gate from the late 60's until the time of his death from colon cancer.

John was the patriarch of his family and greatly loved. He enjoyed family gatherings, pool parties at his house, and holiday dinners with all of his children and grandchildren. He loved tinkering in his garage, and he baked the most delicious molasses cookies!
