Jetta Jane was born in Holden, Millard County, Utah on May 11, 1890 to William Thomas and Elizabeth Sibley Bennett. She was the 4th of 12 children to be born to this couple. She won recognition for being county valedictorian of her class in school. She was secretary of the Sunday School as well as teacher in various classes. She had a beautiful Alto voice and sang duets many times in various places.
One June 11, 1911 she was married to John C. Smith of Fillmore, Utah in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Fillmore, Utah where two daughters, Olene and Elma were born to them. Shortly after Elma was born, they moved to Salt Lake City into a house on 13th South just west of the 11th East. Here Beth Adeline, the third daughter, was born. At this time it was discovered that Jetta had a heart murrer, which limited her activity from then on. Soon thereafter John bought a home at 1157 Sherman Avenue where the three daughters were raised. There was a brief interruption in their life at 1157 Sherman Avenue home when the family moved to St. George for about two years and then to Cedar City for about two years before returning to Sherman Avenue where the girls were all married and Jetta passed away.
While living in Cedar City, the Indians would come begging which would be a fright to the girls, but Jetta would always feed them which gives some insight to the kindness and compassion which she had for everyone she met. While living in Salt Lake, City, John would take Jetta and the girls on an occasional trip through his territory where much of his time was spent selling and being gone so much it increased the load on Jetta but she was a wonderful mother to her three girls and would take them to Liberty Park for picnic outings and rides on the boats and merry-go-round in spite of her poor health and restricted activity. Her heart trouble had become serious along with other complications and she had to spend much of her time in bed. John's sister, Addie, came to live with them and was a great help. John also was very attentive and waited on her even though his work necessitated his being out of town so much.
While on Sherman Avenue, Olene met Daken K. Broadhead and they were married and had three sons. Beth met A. Vernon Rasmussen and they were married and had one son. Elma met Philip L. Richards and they were married and had one son. So Jetta was pleased to have her five grandsons and particularly delighted in her red haired first grandson, Jon Broadhead.
In February of 1943 Jetta's condition worsened and John asked the daughters to come home from California where all three were living in the San Francisco California Bay Area. Olene in Piedmont with her three sons, John Bruce and David. Beth in Berkley with her son, Rodger, and Elma in Oakland with her son, Philip. It was a happy occasion for Jetta to have her family around her in spite of her suffering. John and Jett's father William T. Bennett decided that if she could not recover, and Dr. L.A. Stevens said could not, it would be better if she could go, and they asked Alma's father-in-law President Stephen L. Richards if he would give her a blessing. As many of the family as could be there came and stood in the circle in the living room and Brother Richards gave a very beautiful prayer and asked Heavenly Father to relieve her from her pain and take her unless she could be made well. After the prayer she very peacefully closed her eyes and passed away. This being March 6, 1943.
