According to 1920 (Census Place: Amity, Clark, Arkansas; Roll T625_56; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 55; Image: 651--which shows them next door to Sam and Emma Burchfield) and 1930 census (Census Place: Amity, Clark, Arkansas; Roll 67; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 2; Image: 511.0), he was a son of James O. and Alice J. Franklin.

Funeral services for Herman Fredrick Franklin, who died Wednesday night at a local hospital, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Gross Mortuary chapel.
Brother Glenn Westerman, pastor of Old Country Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be B. Q. Bratton, Edison Johnson, Shannon Montgomery, Matt Brown, Dorman Castle and Doyle Bowen.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the painters and decorators Union Local No. 401, and Charles Bettis and James Wilson.
A native of Amity, Mr. Franklin, who was 49, was born November 5, 1916.
He had been co-owner and operator of the Goddard Coffee Shop here for the past two years and had resided in Hot Springs for the last 40 years.
He was a Baptist and had been a member of the Painters and Decorators Union local 401 in Hot Springs for 22 years.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Delson, Sgt. H. F. Franklin, Jr., Bossier City, Louisiana; a step-son, Charles Blackmon of Little Rock; a step-daughter, Mrs. Leota Toeilen, Hot Springs; four sisters, Mrs. Minnie James, Hot Springs, Mrs. Veda Nutt of Amity; Mrs. Maudie Boyd of Fort Worth, and Mrs. Lola Davis of Hot Springs; three brothers, James Franklin of Shreveport, Albert Franklin of Glenwood and Roy Franklin of Los Angeles, and four grandchildren.
