WILLIAM WILKS DEAD
After a long battle for his life, Willam Wilks died at his residence in this city Wednesday morning, March 9, aged 54 years.
Thus passes to the grave the pioneer citizen of Caruthersville. While there are many older men and women living here than he, none had lived here so long.
Mr. Wilks was born at Mount Vernon, Ind., and came here with his father, John Wilks, 44 years ago.
There was no such place as Caruthersville then. There was a log hut trading point known as Little Prairie a mle east of the present city, with which now rolls the "Father of
waters" whose erosion had eaten away the land.
Mr. Wilks was a good business man and a thrifty citizen. He had friends in all parts of the county.
He leaves a wife and two children, two sisters and one brother. George Wilks, his brother, lives near town, a sister Mrs. Mollie Bowen, in Osceola, and the other, Mrs. Myrtle Spiller, on the home place on Chute 16.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the family residence, after which interment took place in Little Prairie cemetery in the presence of a large of number friends and acquaitances.
