She moved to Chicago, Illinois, with her mother circa 1916-1917, where she met and married Otto Martin Larson February 5, 1918. She and Otto moved to Detroit in the spring of 1919, with friends Edward (Ted) and Ruth Young, where they shared an apartment. With a brief exception of going to work to support their household in 1925 following amputation of Otto's left leg above the knee (the knee was cancerous), Maude was a housewife who did not work outside the home and was focused on family life.
