In 1915, Sam Dixon owned a 15 section ranch southwest of Plains, Texas. He raises high-grade Hereford cattle and registered bulls. He used the JAD brand connected on the left hip. The JAD brand was used by his father. J.A. Dixon, who added the bar for his son's cattle. Mr. Dixon was an authority on brands and earmarks and accompanied cowboys on roundups as a young man and was frequently called upon to furnish the identity of hard to distinguish brands. Mr. Dixon built up his ranch and stock with but one head to start with. He has windmills to furnish water on the ranch every 2-1/2 miles.

Sam Dixon was given a start with a neighbor who offers to give him a pig provided he pulls weeds and feeds them to the sow. Sam raised the pig and traded her brood for a calf and that started him in the cattle business. Mr. Dixno is a charter member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Goree, Texas, and the Grand Lodge and Degree of Houston. He attends the Baptist Church.
