John died at his home 6 miles West of Graham, and was buried with Masonic Honors. He served in the Confederate Army and had lived in Texas for more than fifty years. He was the County Treasurer of Young County for six years.
At time of death his survivors included four children, Tom Dixon of Kent County, Sam Dixon of Yoakum County, John Dixon of Andrews County, and Mrs. William Steadman of Young County.

John A Dixon and his wife had nine children, four were still living at his death. He moved to Texas from Rockford, Virginia in 1857 settling first in Guadalupe County, Texas living there for two years. The family moved to Tarrant County, Texas and then to Young County, Texas in 1878.
John A Dixon joined the Missionary Baptist Church in 1858.
John Dixon was a carpenter and cabinet maker when he came to Texas in the late 1860s. He located on a ranch northwest of the Medlan Chapel Community. He started in the cattle business at that time. He was a charter member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers' Association.
