Arthur Basso joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at Metuchen, New Jersey, in 1904 from St. Patrick's in Indianapolis. As a novice there, he took the religious name Brother Peter and made his first vows in 1906.

Outstanding as an educator of youth, Brother Peter was a polished public speaker who was in demand throughout the South. Gifted with a magnetic personality and a remarkable memory for names and faces, he was an expert in public relations. A capable administrator, Peter served as president for eight years at Catholic High in Baton Rouge and for fourteen years at St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

Peter was thoroughly involved in civic affairs and held offices in several local and national athletic associations. He was a delegate to the Brothers General Chapter in Rome in 1937 and served on the provincial council for the United States Province for seventeen years. He possessed a quick and piercing intelligence, sound practical judgment, a cheerful enthusiasm, and an almost inexhaustible source of energy. Deeply pious, Peter was a true gentleman and a devoted brother.
