George Herrick, one of the oldest residents of Winnebago County, died yesterday morning at the home of his brother, Samuel Herrick, 720 Second Ave. He had lived in this county the last seventy years.
He was stricken by paralysis about two weeks ago and since then his health had declined steadily.
Decedent was eighty-three years of age and was a native of Andover, Mass., being born there March 7, 1824. In 1839 the family came west to Rockford and since that time he had lived here.
The Herrick farm, just southeast of the city, was his home for many years but for the past few years he had lived with his brother, both aged men. Of the family of ten children only two now remain, Elijah L. Herrick and Samuel Herrick.
Decedent was a man of strict honesty and integrity and stood in highest estimation among his fellowmen. Recently his age made it necessary for him to remain in a retired state and aside from his older friends was little known. To those who had known him he always remained a close friend.
The Herrick family was among the first in Rockford and the cobblestone house in Fourteenth avenue now was built in 1849 by the father of the Herricks.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home in Second avenue. The reverand F.M. Sheldon will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Bluff cemetary.
