Brigadier General, US Army, Ret. FITZGERALD, Ga. - Alvie Lee Dorminy died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at Dorminy Medical Center. Funeral services were Friday, August 21 at First Baptist Church. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Dorminy was born in Ben Hill County to the late Albert Walter and Nancy Ada Johnson Dorminy. He was a graduate from Southern Business University in Atlanta as well as The University of Georgia. He had a distinguished 36 year Army career and retired as a Brigadier General. He earned numerous ribbons during his career, and was awarded the Legion of Merit for outstanding service to his country. As a dedicated public servant, he was appointed City Manager in 1973 where he served until retirement in 2001. Mr. Dorminy was president of the Jaycees, president of the Rotary Club, Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge, Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1994 and was named to the Georgia Municipal Association Hall of Fame. At First Baptist Church, he served as Deacon Chairman, Chairman of the Restoration and Renewal Committee, and Church Administrator. His endearing personality, business, military and philanthropic endeavors touched countless lives throughout this country. We are all blessed to have known this role model of impeccable character, integrity and faith. Mr. Dorminy is survived by his wife: Betty Jean Fulford Dorminy; Daughter: Lisa (David, Dave, Jake) Evans; Brother: Gene (Sis) Dorminy and Sister: Carolyn (John) Hackler, all of Fitzgerald, GA.; and Son: Mark (Cindy, Madeline) Dorminy of Nashville, TN In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Vanderbilt University Neurology Parkinson's Research Fund, Nashville, TN.
