Leo Winfred Alley, 84, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, August 20, 2009, following a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Mr. Alley was born in Madison, NC, the son of the late R. E. and Lillie Case Alley. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was witness to the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. Following his time in the service, he attended Guilford College and graduated from Wofford College. He was employed by GMAC. For years he faithfully served as an active member in many ministries at St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mr. Alley will be remembered for his abundant kindness and gentle spirit. He had many passions, including gardening, golf, and Wofford football. He was also a Boy Scout leader, baseball Little League coach, a member of the Sertoma Club and the Men's Christian Breakfast Club.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Barbara Sheppe Alley, and two brothers, Warner and Woodrow. He was a man devoted to his family and is survived by his brothers, Wartha Alley of Madison, NC, and Orell Alley of Stokesdale, NC. A loving father, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Laura and Gary Dietrich of Teaneck, NJ, Leo and Joy Alley of Winston Salem, NC, Mary and Johnny Crouch of Florence, SC, and Edwin Alley of Spartanburg. He especially loved and was beloved by his grandchildren, Joseph and Elizabeth Dietrich, Will and Mary Anna Alley, Kristen and Catherine Hindman, Tim and Betsy Crouch, Cassandra Alley and Mary Freyta. He will also be fondly remembered by his many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2009, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Frank E. Lybrand. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 9801-I Southern Pine Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28273; or to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.

The family would like to thank the staff of McLeod and McLeod Hospice for their loving care.
