"John J. McCarthy was born in 1814 or 1815, in Ireland in the city of Cork. His father was a distiller in the employ of one Frederick Lyons. We do not know his mother or much of his early background, although he may well have been descended from the early Irish clan who built and occupied Blarney Castle. He is known to have had one sister, Margaret, called Peggy."
