Son of John J. McCarthy and his second wife, late in life, "Mary Araminta (Scales) Wild, a widow, reputed to be daughter of former mayor of Manchester, England... She and John had 2 children, a son Louis ... and a daughter Mary, who died in infancy."

" Louis Cochran McCarthy was born to John McCarthy's second wife. We Have no information on her removal or death, but we may assume that she died, as Louis was raised in the family of his half-brother Frederick after his father's death. Sister Frederica told me that his religious observance had become somewhat lax, but that they soon brought him into line with the standards of his faith."

"Lou McCarthy held various writing and editing jobs, and finally worked for many years on the editorial staff of the McGraw-Hill magazine, Coal Age, until his retirement. He was well-liked as a helpful and friendly colleague, and was considered an authority and arbiter on English usage and style."
