Martha was the daughter of Robert Cole and Rhonda "Asher" Cole. She was the 9th of their 12 children. On March 17, 1859 she married James Barnett. They had one son John M. Barnett born January 18, 1861 but James died October 10 of that same year. Martha then married Thomas Anthony Follis on November 16, 1863 at Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois. She was only 40 years old, pregnant with her 7th child when her second husband Thomas Follis died. Martha was small in stature, slender and erect, a quiet person who always wore an apron and also a kerchief around her neck. Wherever she went she carried a wicker basket with her corn cob pipe and large sack of plant leaves prepared for smoking. She moved from Illinois to Texas in 1884, then to Kansas in 1904. She must have been a very hardy person as she reared her family of 7 children and lived to be over 87 years old. She spent most of her life with her single children, Thomas and Dave prior to their marriage. She was living with her daughter Ada Mae "Follis" Karnes at the time of her death. Martha's Follis children were; Robert Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Ann, James Owen, Ada Mae and Dave Riley.
